Workshop Offered on Wildlife and Aquatic Animal Care
Humane Society of Louisiana Hopes to Increase Number of Licensed Care-takers

The first introductory workshop will be held on Monday, July 12th, at Jefferson Feed and Seed, located at 4421 Jefferson Ave, Jefferson, Louisiana, from 6: 30 to 8: 30 pm. Registration fee is $10.00. For more information, call 1-888-6-humane.

(New Orleans, LA) -- Due to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the adverse effect on the coastal region and its marine life inhabitants, the Humane Society of Louisiana will be offering workshops in the New Orleans area and throughout the state to deal with the influx of injured and displaced marine and wildlife. Individuals who wish to house and treat injured marine and wildlife must be licensed by the state, through the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. To house and treat migratory birds or federally protected animals, caretakers must also be licensed by the US Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

"We have an immediate need for more licensed and experienced wildlife rehabilitators and we must be ready and prepared to handle tens of thousands of animals and birds or more during the next several years," says Jeff Dorson, HSL Director. "I am in the process of applying for a permit myself. I need to learn the process and try to help animals and birds on our local level, since the need is so great. I am converting part of my garage to a modest intake and recovery center for injured wildlife. I can house and treat 3-4 animals at a time, and I will encourage hundreds of other individuals to do the same. I see this as part of our personal duty, since the oil spill has affected all of our ways of life," adds Dorson.

The NOLA Veggie Fest is a project of the Humane Society of Louisiana. In its second year, the current incarnation revives HSL's popular Veggie Fests held before Katrina, both at the World Trade Center and the Felicity United Methodist Church. Building on the success of those Fests, HSL held weekly vegan buffets at the Felicity Church for several years, which evolved into the restaurant Jack Sprat's, an award winning vegan restaurant on Carrollton Avenue named the South's best vegetarian restaurant by Vegetarian Times in 1996.

Today, the NOLA Veggie Fest is operated with volunteer support from New Orleans Vegetarian Meetup Group, founded by HSL founder, Jeff Dorson.

HSL promotes nonviolence and compassion for all animals, and its membership is comprised of animal lovers of all kinds. We have held hundreds of educational and awareness events to educate New Orleanians about veganism and farm animal protection since 1988. Whether or not you're vegetarian or vegan, we think you'll enjoy trying out some of the delicious and healthy alternatives to animal products at the Veggie Fest. Come find out more about what you can do to help reduce animal suffering and protect the environment, by adding more healthy
veggies to your diet.
